What is the Difference between Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy?
Hypnosis is a focused state of awareness not unlike meditation and hypnotherapy is the therapeutic application of suggestions via hypnosis
Do you ever remember driving down the freeway and suddenly wondering wow how did I get here?
Or if you’ve ever been completely lost in a good book or movie?
You were in a trance which is hypnosis.
How often does hypnosis happen?
People go in and out of hypnosis dozens of times a day.
Another way of describing it is that period when you first wake up and then when you are just about to fall asleep.
Essentially hypnosis narrows your field of attention enabling you to become focused on what is being suggested to you to the exclusion of everything else.
Hypnosis bypasses the left side or critical analytical side of the brain and heightens and makes more alert the right side of the brain and this allows a direct line of communication to your unconscious mind.
It is this direct line of communication which allows us to ‘suggest’ positive changes.
Why is this important? Your unconscious mind controls your beliefs, behaviours, values, perceptions of past memories, thoughts basically all your nonconscious processes.
In fact, while the exact percentage is still being debated it seems generally accepted that a minimum 95% of our behaviours are unconsciously driven.
For example, the smoker who consciously wants to give up smoking is desperate to give up smoking but can’t control the impulses to grab a cigarette.
Or the person who blushes and it doesn’t matter what they do they can’t control it.
That’s the subconscious mind at work.
When Do I use Hypnotherapy
I use hypnotherapy a lot in one form or another in my sessions.
It is perfectly safe, and its impossible to be hypnotised without your permission.
Whilst occasionally a client will go into a deep trance and will not remember, you are generally always in control of the situation and aware of what is going on.
